As a life long investor, allow me to tell you that there is no such thing as `a quick buck`. The investing of money has to be planned and thought out carefully; unless you want to loose it all. Although it is a lot of money to most people; $5000 is `peanuts` in the investment market. So if this is your first venture, talk to your bank manager or an investing consultant. Take some advice from people in the know. Good Luck.

Look into ING. they have great products and member of the FDIC. Plus you can control your money better then going thru a bank.

guess i am not the one to answer this question. i lost it all because i thought i might be good at picking. it becomes an addiction then you go broke. best to bet on the blue chips like the fortune 500 or a mutual fund. was doubling up every year for five years then i woke and saw everything halfing. finally i got it. i wasn't good at picking them like i thought. good luck.

I second DIEGO's suggestion. Invest some of your money in education. Not much, but some (about 10% of that or $500). I'd suggest you read some of Robert Kiyosaki's investment articles on Yahoo! Finance. Education is the best investment for anyone, instead of just listening to other people's advice, understand why an investment is a good investment. That will allow you to get a head-start, and not be swindled by 'get-rich-quick' schemes.

Successful investing is like learning how to ride a bike. You can't learn it by reading a book, or by listening to a lecture, but by actually getting on the bike and riding it.

As a Financial Professional let me say that you are not going to find a legit way to turn 5K into "big bucks" fast. It is always going to take time. Also you have to really look at the different types of investments that everyone is suggesting to you. Simply putting it into these different bank savings plans are not going to net you much because the interest will be reported on a 1099 that needs to be included on your taxes. By the time that is taken out you will not have much of a gain at all.

Any other advice needed feel free to message me.

Invest in ETF's. Put it in "Vanguard Total Stock Market" (VTI) It has a low expense ratio.

Definition of Mutual Funds: You should know the meaning of mutual funds, before you choose to invest in mutual funds. These funds are a type of security that can be traded on the stock market, allowing shareholders to buy and sell shares in the funds. The revenue generated by purchase of shares is used by mutual fund manager to buy more shares of specific stocks, bonds, and other market securities and money market instruments.

Since the prices of the stocks, bonds, and other securities held by the mutual fund vary, the value of the fund changes. The average value of every share of the mutual fund is fixed daily based on the total value of the underlying securities held by the fund.

Send me the cash I'll take good care of it for you.

Or you can put it in a money market accout. The interest rates for those are some of the highest for savings accounts. And you get to retain all access to your money.
