My, what a bunch of naysayers we have today!

My friend, here's at least somewhere to set up your account before you get going. Anyone who trades stocks needs a broker.
This link compares some of the online brokers - I use Fidelity and have been
very happy with them but they are all very similar nowadays. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/internet/online-brokers/index.html

The least painful way is to invest in about 3 to 5 mutual funds with different investment philosophies, such as a value fund, a small cap fund, a foreign stock fund, a China stock fund, etc.

best thing to do is to get an INVESTMENT ADVISOR, I work for Edward Jones, and its my job to deal with people who are new to investing, they will take you through step by step to determine things such as your risk tolerance and financial goals, and they are specially trained to do so. if you dont want to do that, then you can always go to a discount brokerage, but all they will do is buy the shares you tell them to buy and they wont give you any advice, so this isnt a good idea if you are new to investing

Yahoo! Answers is not a good place for stock broking advice, my friend. Too many scammers, slammers, flamers and otherwise shady characters lurking around here. See a reputable broker instead.

Start with getting educated or you'll be out of money sooner.
Great book: 'The Successful Investor' by Ben Graham .... as a starting point.
