Using sharebuilder there really is no minimum. But there is some risk in doing so because you will be able to purchase only a few shares of one or two stocks. And if you choose the wrong stocks, the experience could be unpleasant.

If you were instead to choose a mutual fund, you will receive a share of a pool of investments so one or two bad apples will not ruin you day. Some mutual funds require a minimum investment of $500 and subsequent investments of $25. American Funds is one. Some of their funds have excellent long term track records.
