To read a few good books before you start investing in the equity markets is a good starting point.
We would suggest
"Security Analysis" by Graham & Dodd;
"The Intelligent Investor" by Bejamin Graham;
"Investment Analysis & Portfolio Management" by Prasanna Chandra;
"One up on Wall Street" by Peter Lynch; amongst others.
In fact, there are thousands of books written on the subject and you could do a search for them; Amazon.com would be a good place to look.
All the best in your search for knowledge.

Start with: "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham.
Also read: "The little book that beats the market"
"Security Analysis" by Graham is the Bible of Value Investing. But understanding it requires more knowledge and patience which only comes with time.

My 2 cents...
For active investing, Cramer's books. I personally like the first one, Real Money.
For passive investing, Beating the Dow with Bonds, which follows the dog of the down methodology.
I'll write a bunch of sites for you to visit, decide how much time and money you have for stock trading/investing and then pick the style that you want. Do not be constrained in one method for putting money in the market, but do read and learn how to do it right.
