I would like to clean up my credit report. Would you recommend trying to pay all old debt or going bankrupt.?

If at all possible...by at all possible I mean if it can be done in under 10 years without doing physical harm to yourself, I would definitely recommend you pay off old debt. I got divorced years ago and was flat broke afterwards with quite a bit of debt. Took me 5 yrs but came out the better for it.

Pay off the old debt. Going Bankrupt is not as easy as it was before. Now, you will still have to pay off old debt and you get the whammy of having that bankrupt thingy on your credit report for the next 7 years.

Generally, if the account has been written off, you have room to try and settle for a lower amount. Note: the payoff of a written off account will stay on your credit report for 7 years.

I had the same decision a few years ago.
I worked two full time jobs and kept my expenses down by not spending money ..this was easy has all I did was work, sleep and eat.. but in the end you will have your dignity that you paid your debts.
sometimes you have to go bankrupt due to health reasons or the fact your are too far gone financially to pay off the debts.
the call is yours but use bankruptcy as a last resort. but thank God we still live in a country where we won't go to debtors prison. Only Uncle Sam will never forgive a debt..the gov't will hound you forever for their money..am i right?

Pay off debt. Bankruptcy will make your future difficult.

It's not as easy to declare bankruptcy anymore...certain states won't allow you to unless you meet specific criteria. Bankruptcy screws up your credit only for about 8-10 years, so if you're young, no biggie.
I would suggest using bankruptcy as a last resort. Try to pay off your debt.
For help, try daveramsey.com.
Good luck.

From what I understand, you do everything before declaring bankruptcy. That should be a last resort because it screws you for a long time.

Pay the other option will definetly flag your report for good.

Don't file for bankruptcy, read this, because you can change your credit report:

Stay Away from bankrupcy!!! The best way to do it if you already have your dept in collections is making a deal with the collection agency and making sure that they report your depts cleared and paid when all is paid.
This will show other creditors in the future that you do pay your depts and it will make it easier to rebuilt your credit.
Bankrupcy makes it harder to rebuilt your credit after the fact as creditors think you could take their money and file for bankrupcy again..........
