I would like to patent an object how do i do it?
i have something that i would like to patent. The idea is still in the very early stages but i would like to know what you require to make a patent. Also can you tell me how much it costs?

You can only patent inventions; however if your object is an invention then you may be able to patent it. You should start by not telling anybody about your invention, otherwise you CANNOT patent it - at least in the UK it's that way. The first person you should talk to is somebody at a patent attorneys. Don't speak to one of those 'do you have an invention - talk to us / call us for free inventors information companies'. Don't speak to a company without having a patent - a disreputable one may 'happily' steal your idea. (My company won't; it will refuse to talk to you and will tell you to go away and get a patent first, then come back to talk...) Getting an idea patented depends on an aspect of the idea being non-obvious and not in the public domain, so by talking to it to anybody that it can be proved in court that you spoke to about it, invalidates your patent. It would depend on the range of countries that you intend to file in as to the cost. You should be thinking about which countries that your idea would be sold in or manufactured in. Costs are high - I think about £3500 very roughly for the first year, although the initial filing is much less than that. I seem to remember a few hundred pounds for the initial filing and the initial search. (That is either just for a UK patent or a European one, I can't remember which.) In practise it is VERY VERY likely that somebody else has thought of your idea, although you may be able to patent an aspect of your embodiment of it. Just because you are granted a patent does NOT mean that it is a 'valid' patent; only a court can decide that. Taking your idea to market would also take yet more money...

Contact the patent office if you want to know how much it costs exactly. (It's something like www.patentoffice.gov.uk in the uk...)

First thing you have to do is determine that no other patent already exists on your idea. That'll run you about 2500 - 10k for an attorny to do that.

If you make it past that hurdle, let us know.
