IRA ... What if the dollar is worthless when it comes time to retire?
I know that companies like TRowePrice invest heavily overseas, would my IRA leave me holding a lot of paper dollars and the company walk away with the goods? Or seeing as those funds would be foreign would I wind up with something valuable?

With the dollar plumetting and weak for about the last two years(..and not originally caused by the current Sub-prime probem), with the grossly mismanaged US National Debt standing at now more than $9 trillion andrising by $1.63 million per day , with oil prices rocketing, with China threatening to dump her trillions $ because of the US govt's intention to tax all her China imports, with World food shortages, with Climate Change problems, with more and more of the World's Central Banks now both unlinking their currencies and paying for commodities like grain, oil and metals in Euros, Yen anything but the crappy dollar(..and so much for the 1944 Bretton-Woods agreement).

Some of these problems(..like oil and energy) will last decades because there is no replacement for things like cheap oil....and when they do eventually find a replacement via Technology - this will take 20 - 30 years to implement worldwide....And the cost of all this ?

If you must invest, invest via an offshore account in non-dollar denominated stocks. Invest in basic commodities like food, grains etc.

Best advice I can give....

You have your choice of mutual funds to invest in. Not all of them concentrate their investments overseas, however, if they did, that would be a good thing if the US dollar lost value, your overseas investments would go up.

If your investments are mainly cash, then yeah you will lose out on buying power. With the dollar dropping, many stocks will actually go up due to increased foreign demand for their products. Inflation is a bigger concern for an IRA than a weak dollar

There are ways to at least partially protect yourself against that evenuality. After all when I was a kid, a Coke cost 5 cents. Now what is it? Seems to me the $ is more or less darn near worthless now. There are certain things that society can not do without. Investing your IRA $ is those things can give a degree of protection. Another method of protection is to invest in areas where finances are of a sounder nature.

Things like energy, food, and real estate generally at least keep up with inflation and much of the time ahead of it. Certain stores of wealth also are sound inflation hedges if not methods of outperforming inflation. And with the ever expanding population natural resourses should certainly beat inflation.

Companies in the past certainly have been know to walk away with the goods, not so much the companies as the CEOs that walked away with the goods. Happens almost daily. You can not really prevent that but you can diversify to hopefully reduce the impact when it does happen. The stock holders of Citigroup probably wished that they had but their form CEO had to haul his take away in 3 armored cars.

The most important concept in investing is;
"Asset Allocation"

Learn about it. Create a model for yourself. Follow it strictly.

If the dollar is worthless when it comes time for you to retire, then so will everything else be. California alone is the world's fifth largest economy, and thus far, they conduct all their business in dollars!

Your fears are unrealistic...

the short side
it all depends what fund...Look at the price of TRowe stock.
Put about 20% overseas and 30% in cash....and stay in now load mutual funds.

Your concerns are unfounded.
