Ideas for low-risk investments?
I've got about $3000 sitting in savings right now earning 1% interest. I'd like to take that 3000 and put it somewhere with a higher return, but I'm conservative with my money, so I don't want to play the stock market or anything risky like that. What's the next step up from a savings account in terms of return?

Remember that there is a trade off between returns and risk. In general, if you increase your return, you will increase your risk (or limit access to your funds). If you want something safe and with ready access, think about a money market fund invested solely in U.S. Treasury securities. Vanguard has such a fund, which currently pays above 2% (although this rate can fluctuate). If you don't mind locking up your money for a while, you can try a bank CD (make sure it's federally insured). Also, some online banks may offer slightly better returns (again make sure your online account is federally insured).

Bank CD, Government/Federal - Central Bank guaranteed debit instrument will be ideal.

What matters most is what kind of terms are you looking for ( do you not want to be able to touch it for how long? Or do you want to have immediate access to that money?

Savings account with interest -= I would recommend just the Etrade Savings account.

but if you dont need it for 6 months /12 months = Savings Bonds

Check out ING Direct. I've been with them for years. Nice. Safe.

I have my cash on hand in an ETrade Complete Savings Account. Paid 4.04% APY last month and is FDIC insuired. This month is still like 3.65% and they deliver on the 8 times the national average they advetise vs bank run savings..

1% is pretty good for a low risk investment. Another kind of investment I always promote is investing in yourself your knowledge.

By getting trained in stocks, and other financial instruments or investment vehicles, you can significantly reduce the risk and at the same time increase the return.

ETF that trades commodities. I recommend oil, silver.

Sure thing. The stock market is going to collapse.
