Gold is usually the saftey net for most downturns, however in our current global situation investors have strong concerns (real or imagined) over any asset that has a flucuating value. In the last few weeks you have had a large flight of capital into US treasury bills, considered the safest investment as it is backed by the US government. This of course has caused a dramatic appreciation of the US dollar relative to other currencies. |

bud68 has it correct, gold is a hedge against inflation, not recession. When the dollar is weak, and the prices of oil and commodities go up, then is the time to buy gold. Not during a recession. |
