If I Had $1000 dolllars in stock with apple in 1980..How much will it be worth now?

ok, I took your challenge to answer this question on my part.

2 things will add to your initial investment 1) stock splits 2) dividends

The stock opened up December 12, 1980 at $22 per share.

Your $1,000 investment would have bought 45 shares.

During the time period there were a few changes in the outstanding shares due to stock splits. The stock splits would directly effect your final number - so let's take a look:

1st stock split: June 16, 1987
2nd stock split: June 21, 2000
3rd split: February 28, 2005

and for example dividends increased quaterly up to .12 in 2005, but no dividends have been paid after December 2005:

There were 21 dividends at .03 cents,
4 dividends at .0275,
4 dividends at .025
4 dividends at .02
2 dividends at started the payback with .015 cents

According to Forbes Apple was a 20 year roller coaster ride - and Forbes notes, "Few investors could hang on through the manic multiyear swings."

Forbes states that through March of 2000 the stock had a lifetime gain of a whopping 2,300 %

In 2003 Apple stock was hovering just above $6 per share, but jumped again to $40 before the last stock split, and then ramped up again to achieve a new high in 2006 at $86.40

If we add the gains from 2003 - 2006 we could add another 1000% percent which would give you roughly just under $3,000,000.

Let's just say this... you wouldn't be here wasting your time on Yahoo! Questions... you'd probably be on your yacht.

Apple went public on December 12, 1980, at $22 per share. Since then, it had a split of a two-for-one twice, most recently in June 2000. These types of stock splits typically double the number of shares an investor owns at half the price.

Last trade put the Apple shares at $73.23

Apple's IPO was in December 1980, but I can only find price data back to September 7, 1984.

The split-adjusted price for that day was $2.60.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=AAPL&a=08&b=7&c=1984&d=09&e=12&f=1984&g=d

I do not recall and do not know the price history of the stock from December 1980 to September 1984. But $1000 put into AAPL shares on September 7, 1984, would be worth about $28,600 today.

If the stock-split history given above is correct, and I think it is, a bit of research indicates that each stock split was 2:1. So if you had bought $1000 worth of stock on IPO day, you would have bought 45 shares, as stated by others. You would now own 360 shares. At $74.70 per share, you would have approximately $26,900 since the IPO (dividends would be trivial).

So, it would have to be a very small yacht. ;-)

I am wondering if there was a stock split between 1980-1987. There may have been, and that would obviously change my number. Keep in mind that the stock dropped 80% from its 2000 peak before bottoming in 2003. That is a whole lot of Forbes' putative 2300% gain-to-that-date.

I don't think they were publicly traded yet. I don't think you could have had any stock.
