If I own stock in a company and it merges into a larger company what happens with the shares?
It depends on the terms of the deal, if they are offering cash or stock, or combination of both, and if its a merger or a purchase. If the offer is for cash, you will get cash in exchange for your shares. And that will be taxable to you, unless its in a tax sheltered account like and IRA. Or they may offer stock in exchange for your shares. Then you would get stock in the other company, or the merged company. That would not be taxable to you until you sold it.

usually you will get a form in the mail to send in your old certificates. you will then recieve shares in the new company, worth equal amount.

I owned a company that was bought by another company recently. My stock basically sat stuck at the price they paid and I couldnt buy or sell or anything for like 5 weeks. Finally my certificates were gone out of my account and I had cash in my account for the price.
