If I spent $100 on an investment and made back $50 of it, what is my ROI (return on investment)?

so got board
roi = (gain from investment - initial investment)/initial investment so in your case (150-100)/100 = .5 or 50%.

negative fifty dollars or -$50

If you only got $50 back from $100, then you 've lost $50. Your rate of return is then -50% or loss of 50%

If you mean you spent $100 and ended up with $50, you have a -%50 ROI.

If you mean you spent $100 and ended up with $150, you have a 50% ROI.

Ignoring time...
If $100 in and only got $50 back (lost $50): -50%
If $100 in and got your $100 + $50 back: +50%

BUT, ROI of money is seldom given without time factored in. In the second example above, if that ROI happen in a week, you'd be on to something good. On the other hand, if that ROI came over 50 years - it's a lame investment. So monetary ROI's are usually annualized (AROI or AROR). When annualized the figure can be compared to standard banking account interest, making it easier to compare the quality of the investment.
