If a company's stock price goes up a few days before earnings, what do you think is happenning there?
Will that dilute the stock price reaction on the day or earnings if earnings are a slight amount above expectations or even?

A stock price rising in anticipation of earnings is indicative of a "buy on the rumor, sell on the news" mentality. The rise of the price per share is a result of investors buying in the hopes(or educated guess) of a co. reporting good earnings for that quarter, and gaining on a further increase in price. Quite often the good earnings, therefore, are "baked" into the price per share before the actual conference call.

Buy on the rumor, Sell on the news

It is a reflection of anticipation that the earnings are going to be good. I've seen shares advance in the days prior to earnings only to retreat hard when earnings failed to deliver.

Hi,

Anticipating the good news.

It does not have anything to do with stock dilution. That occurs when there is a stock split. For example, if a stock sells for $10 and it splits two for one share. The stocks value will go down to about $5 theoretically and the number of shares will double.

The opposite condition happens when companies buy back their stock. The price of the stock rises as they buy more stock back and retire it. Some people advocate buying companies who are buying back their stock such as Cigni (CI).

Go here for a list of good buyback companies - (http://stockpickr.com/port/Mad-Money-Buybacks/).

Good earnings will drive the stock up just a few days before the announce the earning officially. Some investors buy the stock a few weeks before earnings announcements and sell when the announcement comes out. This is known as buy on the rumor, sell on the new.

Of course, if earnings are not good, the stock will fall. Good earnings are one factor in value investing where you pay attention to the fundamentals of the company (earnings, P/Es, etc) as opposed to Technical Analysis where stocks are bought and sold on technical indicators such as Moving Averages Convergence Divergence (MACD) or Stochastics without regard to the fundamentals. There are hundreds of technical indicators and some work differently on a diverse number of stocks.

You have somewhat answered your own question. Often, a run on a stock prior to earnings release is a set-up for the stock price to fall after earnings are released. This is only important if you are a short term trader. Long term investors don't worry about short term swings.

SOUND LIKE THERE ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE THERE EARNING.

There could very well be a leak, in that people who know the earnings will be buying, or their friends will be. However, this can also lead to prosecution and prison if you're caught.

Next, the market could be anticipating that the company will have good results based on other publicly-known factors. Sometimes, they look at competitors or the market in general. If you have a company that sells orange juice, and it had said it expected a 5% increase in sales, but then a few days before, the government says the nation upped its OJ consumption by 15%, people are going to assume that this company probably had more than a 5% increase in sales. Or if all the competitors are saying they had 15% increases, you can probably say that the market is growing faster than anticipated. There can be a whole host of other data that comes out in the days before an earnings announcement, including general economic data, and industry data, and competitive data.

If a company's stock is moving up while other company's aren't, and it's a few days before what turns out to be a good earnings announcement, it's probably a leak. But not definitely.
