If it's a stock like Ford then it is really just a gamble, because nobody knows if they're even gonna be around a year from now.
The stock market is loaded with traps and opportunities at the moment. Some stocks like Ford look like they're dirt cheap, but they're dirt cheap for a good reason. Other stocks like Manitowoc are cheap because people think the recession is going to seriously impact their business. But there are some gems out there. Stocks that have been beaten down for no good reason. Take a look in the Healthcare sector, there are some good names there that should do okay in a recession, and if we don't have a recession they should do even better.
Dan Seferis
Even though as economies worldwide could avoid an outright depression, stocks and especially stocks in the financial sector are amazingly cheap. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. Don't just earmark for that $1.98 stock share... in other words, don't put all your eggs in one basket. The word is diversify! And that's what a wise investor would advise and do.
Clark Kent
If it is that low, it is a good time to sell since no stock goes that low unless it is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Depends on what the corporation is. What their projections for the up coming year are and are they a viable company. Unfortunately we have not see the bottom of the market yet so your 1.98 stock could be worth .01 tomorrow or maybe $10. The money that you are going to use to purchase the stock must be money that you really don't need, and are willing loose. Now is really not the time to start investing in the market.

Most stocks in this price range have a great deal of RISK.
Study the stock carefully. What has been it's trading range? WHY is it at this price (especially if it has been at a much higher price)?
I had shares of Washington Mutual which are now worthless.
On the other hand, Wachovia (WB) got this low and is now worth up to 3 times this amount.
You need to do some homework and not just look at it's price.

It depends on what they are expected to make in earnings next year. If earnings are expected to be 20 cents next year then the expected return would be about 6 percent. I would want at least 8 or 10 percent.

The current share price is not a basis for decision.
