Lands always come back to their original value at some point. Gold is a good protection, but its value will fluctuate. Keeping the money itself is a risk, as its price might deflate, giving you a poor value.
The US is mostly bankrupt, even bonds might become worthless at some point. And they base their value on US dollars and not on gold, so there is a high risk when the US bills become as valuable as toilet paper.

You could take the risk that the US government will not go bankrupt, and buy T-bills.

CD's are said to be very safe right now. Yahoo! just said that it is probably the best way to go. You could also try going with a long term mutual fund provided by Vanguard. The interest rate is about like 20% percent I think. Price of gold is starting to drop fyi so don't invest in that.

the only investment without any risk involves lending your money to us treasury...it means that you should buy us treasury bill/ treasury bond...the default risk of us is pratically 0.
