money doesn't exists for real - it's only on paper
example : you buy a house for 200,000$ in february.
in march, they find some gold underneath your house
they offer you 1,000,000$ for your house (paper value : 1,000,000$ ). you say " no, I'll get 5,000,000 with more negociating "
in april : mistake, there was not much gold underneath your house. Value of your house : 250,000$
You lost 750,000 in 3 months !
but you lose nothing in fact - it was the value on paper ! |

For people hanging on to their positions, the money hasn't gone anyway though they see their account's equity shrink as a result of the market correction.
For people selling their positions, the money is transfered into the contra parties' pockets. Many of these contra parties are short-mid term traders, I believe, while most long term investors are still going to hang on to their positions.
If you are concern with your portfolio's loss in a bear market, you should protect your positions by stop orders and/or put options. |

actually its going to all the people who are betting against these investment vehicles. However gold has been on a huge rise as of late, real estate is only cooling off in certain areas. There are ways that people can short all of these vehicles so when they go down these people are making money.
Plus with interest rates on the rise people are pulling their money out of the markets and keeping it in cash. |
