in this market... put 20K in savings/CDs, 30K in and index fund and 50K in muni Bonds.

If you have any debts in which the interest is very high, you might consider paying off those debts with the money.
"Investing" is a lot like gambling and lately, financial advisors are just trying not to LOSE their client's money, so they are putting it into something safe like Cd's.

Well I don't know your age, but if your in your 20's or 30's right now is a great time to be buying equities. If you've got 20 years plus till retirement then you're money will grow hundreds of times more than it will in a CD or money market for that matter. If your older and closing in on retirement I would suggest sticking to safer low risk investments such as municipal bonds, corporate bonds, or government bonds. Most of these are great at generating income and preserving principal for the retiree as well as give you some tax breaks. Check out some of the financials, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, or WaMu are really oversold at this point and very cheap. I foresee a 300-500 percent gain the financial sector over the next decade or two.

I recommend an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or an easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself. Good luck and happy investing!
