There are varying levels of cheap. I think Sharebuilder and Interactive Brokers are the cheapest, if your order sizes are not huge. TD Ameritrade & E*Trade are the usual "fairly cheap" brokerages, but more expensive than the previous two.
Secure is an interesting question: All standard web browser connections to the brokerage are (or should be) using SSL encrypted internet comms. But all the major brokerages have experienced some account damage and loss from hackers. It is covered by their insurance. So where are the potential problems?
If you have a virus or worse yet spyware on your computer, it can detect and transmit your brokerage password to some illicit operator. So keep your anti-virus anti-spyware up-to-date.
E*Trade will provide an electronic key-fob with a changing 6 digit number display for free. You add these digits to the end of your password. If someone steals your password, it doesn't matter because those 6 digits will be different each time you log-on.
The most common problem is when a person connects to their brokerage thru an open computer in a hotel lobby, coffee shop etc. These computers often have spyware planted onto them. So you should only use your own computer. |
