If shares are owned in a company and that company is taken over, what happens to the shares ?
Will the shares of the original company be canceled or will the value drop?

The new company usually offers a price per share in the take over. Sometimes it's all cash, sometimes it's cash & stock, sometimes all stock. Either way, the shares will be converted into shares in the new company. Usually, when there's a takeover, the buyout price is at a premium so the old shares usually increase in value.

You will probably get some paperwork regarding the buyout and instructions on how to turn in your old shares to get new shares.

The buyer either buys all the shares from shareholders for cash, which is taxable to the selling shareholder. Or, if its another company buying then they may exchange so many of their shares for so many shares of the company they are buying. In that instance its not taxable to the selling shareholder, until they sell their shares.

normally the buyer will make an offer

if a company is taken over, all shares are taken over no matter who owns them. If the company has bought some of it's own shares, they are taken too.

You mean to the share owned by the company that's being taken over? Just like other assets, it will become the property of the buyer company. The price paid for the target company will likely to reflect the value of the shares owned by it.

You get money or new shares or both.

?
Depends on what the agreement is.

Some companies exchange shares for the new company 1 for 1.
Sometimes the current company buys all shares back from you.
Sometimes they file bankruptcy and you’re in trouble..

Most of the time though its either a buy out or an exchange. At least that’s the way it’s been for me.
