Bank or stock market? You have interest in bank and chances of doing well or bad in the stock market. If stock market, what type of stock? |

You told what side of the fence you are on, bank equals "chances of doing well" and stocks "bad".
The real issue is could you do better in the stock market? If you can't, then you are right, put it in the bank.
But if you could do better, then you carefully select something in the market. Usually, you don't really invest in the "stock market" unless you are buying aggregate things like exchange traded funds. Some common benchmarks are DIA, commonly called "diamonds", and each share buys into a trust that holds a mix of the 30 Dow Jones Industrials. This way, whenever you hear the stock market report and they tell what "the Dow" did, you know what your investment is worth. Another common benchmark is the Standard & Poors 500, which you can buy into from the ETF called SPY.
There are many more, consider DVY which is the Dow Jones Select Dividend ETF. It currently has a "yield" to the dividend disbursement at above 4 percent.
Part of the distinction is, you are owning a piece of a set of businesses that are known for (1) making steady profits, and (2) being steady at paying a piece of them to their owners --the stockholders. With your money in the bank, the bank is making a profit by investing (or usually loaning) your money out to people for far more than they are paying you. You don't own anything, except the thousand you put in, and if they make more than they expected with your thousand, well they only owe you what their announced savings interest rate says. Oh, well. |

Stock market the banks don't pay out much. I would suggest learning to trade instead of just buying 1 stock and holding onto it. But that is just me. |

if thats all you have, i'd invest in myself whether it be a drum set to learn to play for money, or products you can sell yourself,,if you stuck on an investment,,try a balanced mutual fund inside an IRA. if you try to be a trader, you will trade it all away in not time, as trading is more about luck than an investment. |

Everybody is different.
I bought GE last because I like the dividend being up to 4%.
But that is me and I have a lot of other investments.
If I had only $1,000 I might buy a high dividend stock and then have the dividend checks put in the bank to spend or reinvest later so I would not want to cash out the stock and spend that.
I believe in rewarding yourself for doing the right thing and investing the money.
For a person that is very young I think there is a Kid's mutual fund with a low buy in that invests in things they know like Disney, or Mattel and they can relate to those.
For an older person I say save up $3,000 and buy a regular mutual fund and you still can get the dividends and capital gains sent to you. You get more diversification with mutual funds and thus safety.
And you can get a fund with both stocks and bonds (balanced fund).
It shouldn't be either/or, it should be both for careful investing and lower risk.
