If you had 100K to invest......how would invest it...given today's market?
Assume you have rec'd an inheritance and the 100K is what you want to put aside for investing. You have paid off bills and put other money aside for savings.

I would take time and read my post history and compare that to everything else you are reading here, and then you will know who to pay attention to and who not. Try avoid taking advice from the 15 year olds who know nothing about markets, politics, or how the economy works.

I have posted a ton of help on long term investing here on Y!A.

For the gold bugs:
Inflation Adjusted return on gold over 30 years
http://goldprice.org/inflation-adjusted-gold-price.html

30 years chart of gold.
It took 28 years to get back to it's previous record highs.
http://goldprice.org/30-year-gold-price-history.html

You were better off dollar cost averaging in the S&P 500 Index, or even holding on to only CDs and treasuries than buying gold for the long term. That chart will bust again at some point. And then all the gold bugs will be posting, (whining) "is gold going to go back up?" -- "Should I sell my gold (after it falls $200+ an oz)" -- watch.

Let's date this shall we? 10-01-2008

Tough timing.
Fortunately, I had most of my money in money market funds prior to Sept.19 so they will be eligible for the extra protection. If that weren't the case, I would probably start by either buying a house or splitting the monies in half between 2 major brokerages such as Schwab and Fidelity and put the monies into those brokerages' affiliated bank accounts which are FIDC insured and pay higher interest than standard bank accounts. If I were sure that I didn't need the money soon, I might consider some short term (3 month) CDs instead, which are also FIDC insured. Since I like to dabble in trading, I'd leave some in the brokerage account at Schwab to trade. I haven't gotten into the gold rush, but I'd consider a little. What a lot of people don't know is that gold, even some gold stocks, is considered under the tax category of "collectible" and is taxed higher, so gold mining companies might be a better choice. (link about this below) I'd choose Schwab to trade with over Fidelity for the time being because I'm a little annoyed w/Fidelity lately that they have so little to short trade these days.
The reason I say a 3-month CD is because I wouldn't trust the market at all until possibly the beginning of next year. I think a lot of companies will close out with the turn of the year (when most companies come to the end of their fiscal year) bringing the market down. Then, depending on how things are going, I might consider some mutual funds.
If you don't have a house, a house might be a good bargain. I would wait until indicators point to the housing market leveling somewhat or find a rock bottom foreclosure deal. I put a link of area trends. Note that as more people lose jobs, more foreclosures are likely, so it might be worth it to wait. Then again, if you need to take a mortgage, it might be very difficult in the future, if not already, because of the credit crunch.

If I could go back in time to 2 weeks ago I would have invested 100K in Freddie Mac at 25 cents. I would have sold at $2.50 and my investment would be worth 1 million. Then I would have bought Wachovia at 75 cents and sold at 3 dollars for a 400% gain overnight, now having 4 million in cash.

With the 4 million dollars I would have invested in National City 2 days ago at around $1.30 a share. Right now National City is selling at $2.90 a share so my investment would be worth well over 8 million dollars.

Equities. There are any number of beaten down stocks that will make you look like a genius 5 years down the road. Never bet against free market capitalism or the American People.

What an AWESOME question...Now is a horrible time to invest. I'd put it into savings until I did some serious research.

If Obama wins: Invest in US market index stocks...they have reached bottom and will rise as Obama regulates business so CEOs, Insurance and Banking companies have to back up their loans under law.

If McCain wins: run like the wind and invest in Nordic stocks, which are both stable and far removed from US stocks. In this case McCain will likely do what Bush has done and "let the economy take care of itself" so insurance companies and banks will keep cheating, CEOs will commit fraud...and the US economy will begin to resemble Enron (which also was not regulated).
