I have a couple of practice portfolio on wsj.com (Wall Street Journal) that I started around April or May of this year. I would probably mirror them.

Since the Fortune 500 and the S&P 500 are largely the same, I looked at both lists and culled out the top profit earners: AIG, BAC, C, COP, CVX, GE, IBM, MO, WMT, XOM--I'm up 28 percent.

Then I saw an ETF for the top divident paying blue chips in the Dow Jones index for them (DVY) and culled out ten from the top of those I was most comfortable with: C, DD, DUK, ED, GMT, JPM, MO, MRK, T, VZ--that list is up almost 23 percent.

I figure a million along each of those two lines and I would be happy.

I'd invest about 500K in the NYSE and 300K in CD's and T-bills.
The Rest would be for me to have fun with, maybe buy a house up in the mountains or down on the coast. Probably on the coast it is too cold this time of year in the mountians. Then I would have some fun with a couple of people!!

500k on a house (northeast, fla, or somewhere else where the bubble is bursting), but take out a mortgage for the amount and take the actual cash and put it in low-risk (bonds, cd's, mutual funds etc). Then rent the house. The interest and rent will more than pay for the mortgage (so in 30 years you make whatever the surplus is, plus the value of the house, which will be a lot more, esp in those areas). Take another 500k and give it to a financial planner. Tell him to invest in medium risk NYSE stocks of his choice that pay dividends so you get more cash flow. Take another 500k and put it into a hedge fund of some sort (thats generally the firm minimum). Take the last 500 and do something entrepenureal.

200k to 500k in a house and furnishings
1000k in municiple bonds to provide current tax free income
100k in Chinese and Indiana stocks and mutual funds
100k in small cap mutual fund such as PENNX
200k in investment grade stocks as BAC, MMM, JNJ, HD, MET etc
100k to 300k in cash equivalvents t-bills for whatever oportunities might arise.

With such a pool one shoud generate 100k to 200k a year in income and capital gains on average.
