If you only have $50k and you are saving for your retirement, consider the Couch Potato Portfolio. It does better than 3/4 of mutual funds and it is easy to manage. |

currently i would put it in a Vanguard.com money market account or something similar (4.25%). when the stock market corrects by at least 30% i would go into a broad index fund ETF such as VTI. |

With 50k you could use part of it to help you get started in real estate investing. If you have not yet purchased a house as a primary residence for yourself you should use a percentage of the money for that. You have enough to also put a down payment on a second house and keep it as a rental which will supplement your income. If you get your houses in good locations, they will increae significantly in value. The interest on your payments can be written off your taxes and so can the money that you put into the rental for any repairs. Ask a reputable real estate agent to help guide you through the process. The transaction commissions will come out of the seller's pockets, not yours. |

I would keep 25k in a bank as a security from being bankrupt and the rest 25k would be invested in a call center facility, stock market, web hosting and a scholarship program for needy students.

Read all of the previous answers. All have their merits, comng from different levels of risk taking & investment knowledge & expertise.I have made substanital amounts of money in real estate-shrude investing ? 50 % yes & 50 % -dumb luck-right place/right time.Best advice I could give would be to definitely invest in your own home-buy a house-not rent-provided that the market in your area is not overinflated at this time,-many are-and you plan to remain in your present location for at least 5 years-otherwise purchase expenses could exceed return. Rental property is good too,but be very choosie and careful-you could get burned.Good money can be made here, best if you are good with tools etc. yourself- I'm not I would then diversify-divide the remainder in 1) an emerging eastern european markets fund-I use Metzler/Payden-done well-average about 50 % per year-may not repeat 2)a Pacific rim fund-I use MCHFX-specializes in China-the big up coming market-am also looking at India 3) PTF for an oil company with good return-apx 11 % dividend-only pays out 45 % of earnings 4) a good energy services mutual fund- FSENX/FNARX-have done well for me-over 50 % in this past year-definitely do NOT expect a repeat-I hope-not-chancy-too much turmoil this past year in energy markets 5) 2 core equity funds-like SWANX & SWPNX both have done well 6) small position in precious metals etc.-also use a mutual fund-several around-that invest in both the metals & the companies that produce them *** Lastly-share some of what you make with those in need-hurricane victims-Katrina,poverty relief ie: Uganda & Haiti-the most important investment is the people one- Am NOT an investment counelor- rather a retired high school dean & coach-always enjoyed working with young people- I like to travel, and want only investments that I can 'rest easy' with-not lie restlessly awake worrying about. All investments should be monitored,at least once a week-nothing stays 'great' forever -Also do maintain adequate-cash reserves--each person's needs are different- for emergencies GOOD LUCK |
