If you were 50 yrs old and had 300,000 to invest through a settlement what would do with it ?
I like to put 1/3 in the market with moderate risk, I prefer individual stocks or sector funds rather than mutual funds.

First, I suggest that you pay-off your house, and then invest in moderate risk mutual funds -- diversified. Stocks can be wildly volatile and sector funds come in second to that risk.

After paying off debt;

I'd work on a good asset allocation & follow it. In the stock portfolio I'd have 50% in individual stocks (Large cap, Mid Cap (value and growth) & ADR's) and 50% in ETF's.

What ever you do don't take "tips" on specific investments from anywhere (but especially in this forum).
Good luck!

Pay off all your revolving debt, apply the third in stocks, hedge with some decent grade bonds, no funds, and use the rest for real estate flips.

It is hard to give comment for individual stock or which sector.
I will suggest investing in Index Fund. As index fund mirror with an index such as S&P500, it will always have the similar performance as the market.
If the return is 10% and you invest $100,000, by the time you are 71, it will become $600,000 approximately.

Here is one professionals opinion. Don't pay off your mortgage since you can write off mortgage interest. You do want to pay off any credit card or other debts. You should probably put half in the market and half in bonds. Since you don't have enough to build a diversified stock portfolio you should invest in ETF's. You can research the ones you want at www.etfconnect.com or www.ishares.com There are both market, sector, domestic, international and bond ETF's available.

You can use 300k to control about $3M worth of property
But if you don't know what you're doing youll be doomed

You could also use it for rehab projects,
You could even buy raw land in big chunks and parcel it out (usually you will double on those deals)

Just be sure you know what you are doing and check up on zoning and all of that
