If you were in my situation, what would you do?
Ok, so I am 23. I have some money for a mistake at birth. About $265,000. I am not going to be able to get a college degree mainly because of the mistake. I have a high IQ but could not manage being a full time student. My question is this? What would you do with the money? I would like to retire as early as possible. I would also like this money to grow to at least 1 million by 30 years a (4.526% return) My goal is actually to get 6% That would get me to 1.5 million. I am thinking a 4.5% return is realistic.

The only real issue with this idea is do you think I can live off of 9-11/hr on my own until retirement? I don't plan on getting a degree, at least in the near future I don't. My other option is to live off the interest of $265,000. But, I don't think that's the right decision because I would only be making 12,000-13,000 off the money a year. If I let it compound for 30 years, I make 29,000 off the money a year. A huge difference.
Additional Details
19,000 a year

Your expected return is very realistic, and relatively ease to achieve. I would try to invest the money on a diversified portfolio and also would try to make some money by working, eventually you end up liking your work and might even help to boost yours 265,000 by making monthly deposits.

Since the economy is down and more and more ppl are looking to renting as opposed to buying and more ppl are being forced to rent because of foreclosures i think ur best bet is to use that money for a down payment on apartment buildings. I come from a family of landlords and trust me, they are well off enough to retire early. Believe it or not that is very good money. plus you can get a building on pre forclosure so its even cheaper for you to buy and you would be making income from it sooner. GOOD LUCK

Stay busy! Stop thinking about this money as something you can feed off now. You have a great mind! Use it... It's worth 10 X what you have in the Bank....

Look up Primarica, a part of citi financial...they are great and will help you get the most out of your money. It is all about making you money work for you not you work for your money.

Best of luck

Jessica
I think you should let the money grow. Living off the interest would not get you anywhere in this day in age. Everything is so expensive. I would just but it in the bank and let it grow. And when you retire, you will be able to do what ever you want with that money..sounds like a good plan to me! I wish I could do that.
