In this down economy, what should I look at to invest in?
Looking towards the future, I see this as a golden opportunity to invest, but haven't a clue what field to look in. I have never invested in my life. What should I look at investing in, to get maximum returns in 10 to 15 years?

Start listening and watching Mad Money. Jim will educate you. Don't invest what you cannot afford to lose. Stick with solid companies with good products that people buy. Johnson and Johnson, GE, Kraft, that sort.

I think the beverage industry is one of the easiest to understand. One company I like at a price in the 20s or even the low 30s is Hansen Natural Corp., maker of the Monster Energy and Java Monster lines of drinks.

You might wish to read the book The Warren Buffett Way (by Hagstrom). It's the best investing book I've read. Buffett, arguably the world's greatest investor, looks for companies that are easy to understand, have strong competitive advantages, predictable earnings growth, excellent returns on capital, and are selling at a reasonable or bargain price.

Monster and Red Bull are the leading brands in energy drinks. Monster is growing much faster and will almost certainly become the number one energy drink in the near future.

Nasdaq: HANS

How much money you are talking about is an important issue. So is other money, such as savings, mortageg, life insurance, etc. To buy individual stocks, you should have at least $25,000 so you can buy several. If less than that, just buy a good mutual fund.

Depending on how much money you have. Right now your safest bet would be GOLD. Financial advisers will tell you that it is terrible and that you should only have 10% in your portfolio, blah, blah, blah. But THIS IS NOT A NORMAL ECONOMY with all this money thrown at bailouts, look for inflation to rise in 2009. Gold would go up during inflationary times. Also, gold has out performed every asset class, and has out performed the Dow Jones!

The stock market is a mess and it will continue to go down as the economy gets worse. Of course you don't want to keep your gold forever, rather use it as a safe haven during financial instability and get into cheaper investments later on. The economy will get a lot worse so just sit on the sidelines for now.

Commodities (except gold) have taken a huge beating as of late. But down the road commodities look pretty good! Look up investor JIM ROGERS on Youtube!!!!

Actually it depends on what sum of money you are talking about.
if $ 100-10.000 then very nice variant is investmentforge.com
if more then 10K try the Stoic(but Stoic is not quite good for me)

Basic food stock companies. Kelloggs, Kraft, Campbell Soup.
People must eat that is a given. They just buy the necessities and anyone with kids will tell you that cereal cannot be cut from the food budget.

If you have a mortage on your home. Pay it off. Your home is the best investment you can have. There is not sure fire bet with stocks, but your home is.

Investing in property (real estate) - hardly ever lets you down over the long term (pick yr property carefully tho - a good sound property as cheap as you can get it).

Yeh, I know it is property that has caused all this mess at the moment, but this is a good time to buy, as prices are falling and there are a lot of foreclosed empty properties on the market. They are glad to get rid of them.

Once you have them and have paid for them, you have a rent income for life.

I would stay with CDs for now, but look to get back in the market soon after January 1, 2009. Good luck.

I am not kidding you, invest in OIL ETF, oil is now about $30 per barrel from a all time high of $147, if you do invest in oil and it does drop to $15 dont worry it will eventually rally up again, plus slim chance for oil to go bankrupt

USO (this is the one I have shares in, Im down but I will wait)
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=USO

DXO (this is similar to USO but doubles your gains)

Good Luck!!!
