Scott T | Invest during a recession? |
Almost every company's stock price has dropped over the past 3 months or so. Since everyone is down (lots of shares at half of their value a year ago), would it be wise to invest in a diverse range of stocks now? I mean, the market will (most likely) bounce back in the next one or two years and prices will rise again. Could someone invest in several companies now and ALMOST assure a profit? Sure, some companies will continue to decline after the recession, but most will bounce back. Is this an easy net profit in the next 1-2 years? (This is all assuming the market comes back and the world doesn't end.) |

Everyone always says "Buy low and sell high." So why are so many people asking questions now instead of following the advice they have always heard.
Prices are low -- buy low |

It's all on sale! Like you say some at 40,50,60,70,even 80% off! will it go lower maybe that's why you buy stock every month. Month in and month out. It's called dollar cost averaging and in the long haul it works like a charm |

Tough question. Traditionally yes, but the companies you're invested in have to weather the storm before they can bounce back. Lots of companies are going under completely, taking their investors with them. I personally think that Green Technology is a good bet. The US Green Building Council has been approached by the president elect's team to advise on a green new deal of sorts. Their recommendations include green job growth, investment in green infrastructure and a greening of the white house among many other things. |

Robert M said it poignantly and correctly.
Your hunch is correct- you should invest when everything looks terrible, because that's when you're going ot make the best profit (in the long run, of course). It's the old adage (far less eloquent than Robert's) "Buy low, sell high". Some of the wealthiest individuals in history have made a lot of money by investing in pitiful stocks while the economy is bad. The vast majority of companies pull through, and when times are nice again, and everyone else is looking to invest in the next big thing, you'll already own a bunch that you paid a fraction of what they're paying for it. It takes patience and an eye for the future, but after that, there's not much to it.
Nice observation, and good luck to you. :0) |

"Everyone always says "Buy low and sell high." So why are so many people asking questions now instead of following the advice they have always heard."
--------
I say it is because the majority refuse to do the "Sell High" part. It is not in their nature. It is difficult to "Be fearful when others are greedy". |

I would wait until the earnings season is over and see if the dow holds above 8k. The market most likely will come back over time - yes. But we don't know how far it will fall first. Thats the biggest problem. The market is still full of bad news. How about just deal with the market as a whole and not expose yourself to one possible bad company problem? You seem to be interested in the whole market by the question?
Dia or spy.
I think we could see 10k on the dow by the end of the year. What do you think? 9500? Thats still 10 points up on the dia share price. |
