Investing? How to play the stock market?
I am receiving about $2,000 from my taxes this year and rather than blowing the money, I'd like to know what options I have in terms of investing the money and perhaps turning it into a bigger lump of cash. Are stocks the way to go? I'm 25 years old and I've never delt with any kind of stock before and I have no clue how it all works. All I know is that if I invest right, I have the potential of turning this $2,000 into something big. Any help?

What is wasteful about getting a large refund??

buy low and then sell high. That is the key.

Investing is a boring, very long-term thing. You want to "play" the stock market and turn $2,000 into something big--a fancy car, perhaps. Take the money to a casino.

I would also agree that you should probably invest in a roth IRA. That money should grow into big bucks for your future. However, if you want to invest in stocks then I recommend Scottrade.com(you can open a Roth IRA here too). good luck.

This sounds like a great time for you to start learning about the stock market. Even if you lose half of the $2,000 at least you will have learned a lot about the market. Then you will have a better understanding of mutual funds when you start your Roth IRA.

To practice trading stocks with fake money, try a site like this:

Good luck!

Once you use the word play you should avoid the market. Not a game. Should put money in stocks but in a Roth IRA. Have to invest but no speculating. ADX or similar fund & let it grow. Also fix your w-4 so you stop getting such large refunds. Wasteful.

Hi

At the age of 25, this is the rite time to invest in shares. Becoz one can take the risk of investing in shares. You must choose good companies to invest in. But the investment risk is very high. If you are risk tolerant, you can invest in shares. But remember one thing, dont be greedy in investment. Shares are very volatile in nature. Be prudent in investment and choose good companies.

I second the recommendation for a Roth. By the time you're at retirement age, you could have a very large chunk of change--and all of the gains would be TAX-FREE.
