Jonathan Mathew McClellan | Investment Advice? |
Hi, I am 19 years old and would would to invest $10,000.00. I do not want anything too risky at this point in the game because I plan on this being short-term. I would like to access the money in 3-5 yrs when I go to make a downpayment on my house or what ever major costs I may assume after I graduate. I figure I should do something with it so it doesn't just sit in my savings account drawing 1.5% for the next 5 yrs. I was looking into Fidelity's options this afternoon. I was just wondering what anybody's opinion is on where I should put this money that will yield a better return than my savings account and also be lower risk. Thank you for your time. |

Consider the Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund with a current compound yield of ~4.7% APR. https://flagship.vanguard.com/VGApp/hnw/FundsSnapshot?FundId=0030&FundIntExt=INT
Sometimes other institutions will have a higher teaser rate, but Vanguard tends to have the highest yields I've found over the long run. (Vanguard money markets are not FDIC insured, however.)
Article on teaser rates:

ING and HSBC often have rates close to Vanguard, and most of their products are FDIC insured. Bankrate.com provides links to CD's with high interest rates. You can check these at the following links:
http://home.ingdirect.com/

(If you were investing for a longer period of time and are willing to accept some volatility, you should consider putting some money into no-load low-expense mutual funds. These are not guaranteed, but over the long run produce much higher returns.) |

You can certainly do better than 1.5%. If you go to bankrate.com, you can see which bank is giving you the best 3-5 yr CD rate. There are many in the 4-5%.
If you want to learn about how to invest in the stock market, you can put a small amount of money - 10% in a stock account and the rest 90% in CDs.
For small amounts ($1000), look at www.sharebuilder.com, this lets you buy small amounts of a stock for a modest fee.
But treat this as risk money and a way to learn about stocks and dont go overboard. |

How riak averse are you. A 3 year CD sounds like the thing you may be looking for. But the yield will not be great, (4-5% probably), but it will be FDIC insured. You have no access to the money, however, until it matures. You could also buy a zero coupon treasury that matures in 3-5 years, but again low yields. Corporate bonds will provide better yields, but there is more risk, although not nearly as much as stocks, especially if you stick with an investment grade company. |
