Is $5000.00 worth investing?
Are there any suggestions for making such an investment? I have never invested anything before.

Yes $5000 is worth investing. Before you invest that money successfully (or before we can make any successful suggestions), you (we) must know something about investing (you) like what your goals are, time until you need this money, risk tolerance, job, debts, etc. So the first investment you should make is time and a trip to a library or bookstore. Get and read a good beginners book like "Mutual Funds for Dummies" by Eric Tyson.

Most "quality" mutual funds such as you will find at vanguard.com require a $3,000 dollar initial deposit to get going.

You can start investing in "individual" stocks or ETFs for less than $3,000. However, as a new investor stay away from "individual" stocks until you completely understand how the markets work.

Best advice is read and learn all you can there are plenty of FREE investing websites out there to assist you.

It certainly is worth investing. And the best way for a beginning investor to begin is with a mutual fund. Actually, $5000 is enought to buy 2 different mutual funds so you can get excellent diversity. But investing needs to be for the long term normally about 5 years minimum to get decent results.

A Couple of mutual fund companies to check out are Fidelity and T Rowe Price. Also Vanguard but Vanguard has a higher minimum of $3000 per fund.

Here are the links

Fidelity

T Rowe Price

Yes, yes by all means it is plenty enough. However! Invest first in knowledge and education. Visit http://investools.com Look on the left hand side of the page and click on 'Find a free 2 hour introductory class near you' under 'Getting Started' You'll be glad you did. Take a friend, spouse or family member with you. I'm currently in the education process and am investing and I'm very thankful I did.

Go to a local investment company like Edward Jones, or one of the many others. And yes $5000 is worth investing. $500 is worth investing. Start now!!!

Mutual Funds: You should know the meaning of mutual funds, before you choose to invest in mutual funds. These funds are a type of security that can be traded on the stock market, allowing shareholders to buy and sell shares in the funds. The revenue generated by purchase of shares is used by mutual fund manager to buy more shares of specific stocks, bonds, and other market securities and money market instruments.

yes...you can invest in mutual funds:

As the mutual funds are designed by investment companies to buy shares in different stocks and other securities, the mutual fund investor along with their ownership of shares of the mutual fund, have a restricted claim to ownership on few of the securities held by the mutual fund. Besides mutual funds provide the dual advantages of diversification and professional money management services to manage the money invested in the fund.

I would not invest in stocks and shares at the moment, unless you can afford to put it away for 8-10 years. Put it in a bank high interest account.
