Is STOCK TRADING a GAMBLING?

Zane M
Well if you proceed investing in the stock market with money you cannot afford to lose and with no research then yes it could be considered gambling.

Remembering there is more than one way to skin a cat. High profit does not necessarily mean high risk as long as you have a decent understanding of what you're doing. One strategy that I employ to make quick cash is option trading or renting shares

Here is my explanation of stock options/renting shares and how I've come to understand them.

Essentially, you buy shares when they are trading at a low price, and then sell the right to buy the shares (if they increase in value to a pre-determined amount, by a pre-determined date) to a third party. You are paid an upfront figure for each share, which you get to keep.

Example being that if you wanted to rent out your 1000 shares at the current call option of 40 cents each then you will be paid $400 up front by the company "renting" your shares. This $400.00 is yours to keep the only catch is they can be sold by the third party if the shares go up to the agreed price then they have the right to buy out your shares or exercise them - so this amount will be predetermined by you and the third party before you proceed. So within a period of a month you have received the $400.00 up front plus your capital gain on those shares, if they went up $1.00 then you have made yourself $1400.00 in that one month. If they don't reach the pre-determined amount, you keep the shares and can put them back on the option market.

The other option is you sign a contract with a company saying you will buy 1000 shares if they fall to $10.00. The company pays you upfront for each share you agree to buy based on the put option chart which lets say is 50 cents per share, then if the shares do drop to $10.00 you are obliged to buy them. So you have now been paid $500.00 you buy the shares and now option them out and basing ourselves on the above mentioned figures you have made $900.00 and only just bought these shares....Not bad!

In saying that if the shares never drop to $10.00 in that month then you have been paid $500.00 for something you will never buy.

There is a whole book and DVD dedicated to this strategy that you can get for free - http://www.free-dvd.com.au

Are you asking if it's a gamble, or if it is a form of gambling? If the former, yes, there are always risks involved with investing in the stock market, and it is considered a higher risk investment than most others. If the latter, then no. Gambling is the exchange of money based on wagers and probability. The stock market is an investment into real businesses using the money for production.

That depends on what you consider gambling. Everything in life involves exploiting probabilities. By properly analyzing a stock you increase your likelyhood of making money on a stock.

Pure gambling will always result in a loss because the house lays the gambler poor odds. I'd put short term stock trading in the same category as poker since both are zero sum games. Someone will win and someone will lose. The winners are the ones who are the best at exploiting the odds.

Buying stocks for the long haul, however, is a different story.

not at all....it is an art and a science....people who are coward call it gamble. fools jump in burn their fingures and then blame market. people strudy 20 years in their life to become a doctor/engineer and don't want to spend time to learn trading.

Stock trading is not "gambling" .

You may be taking a risk in trading, but if you have the experience, and follow well defined rules and guidlines you are not gambling since you have control over the risk and have reduced or eliminated any possible losses.

Trading is the same as investing only it's for a shorter period of time. Many financial institutions invest billions of dollars for a one or two day period, this is considered trading and is not looked upon as investing,

No, stock trading is not gambling. In cards game there is gambling. For every round of card game you have to pay the toll which is common to all. In stock trading there is no toll, hence not gambling.

No, Bea cause if you planing for your and your Family good future via investing your money in stock market and your thinking is long term investment but at any point of times you will get the good opportunity for book the profit which is with extremal good return and which you are never expected and you will book that profit that good strategy But other point of view YES, stock Trading a gambling because if are doing daily basis trading for e.g day trading like daily basis buying and selling then it is purely gambling.

The outcome of every trade is uncertain and in my view short term trading (as opposed to investing) is a negative sum game, because of the costs involved (commission). Basically it shifts wealth from one participant to another minus the brokerage costs and slippage (which are substantial on many trades). Also, most markets are so efficient that it is near impossible to find a sustainable long term edge.

Cheche Little
yes, there is still a risk involved

Stock Trading is the worst gambling in this world. It is worsen than gambling in carsino and race track. The loss will end up with a complete flat broke or even in debt and committed suicide as quite a few happened in Hong Kong every year. Stock Trading is simply described as a gamble by guessing the ups and downs of shares' prices. It seem when the prices are low is time to buy, and sell it to make money when the prices go up. It is a scam to rip off the common share holders with many ways. For instance, when a company is allowed to list in the Hong Kong stock Exchange, that listed company is legitimit to issue stock with market value usually 50 to 100 times more than its total assets. The common share is priced at a nominal value to attract the buyers. The small buyers usually gets at low and dump out at higher prices. But the reality is not as simple as this, the inside trader or rogue trader, just like the British guy who had lost the England's oldest bank, Barin, and out of jail recently. The worst thing happened in the stock trading is the fact that the inside top peoples sliced the investors money by giving the fancy names as "compensation or bonus of millions each for the founders of the copmany" and mant dirty tricks. Inside peoples are entitled to buy share at the price of $1 for the existing market price of $5-10 dollars". The Iraq war is also caused by oil shares trading in Dow Jones. Do you know the US vice president Cheney's wife's recent year income tax return are higher than Bush and Laura's annual income, for many consecutive years. Cheney's wife is specialized in crude oil trading. Never think about atock trading, it is gamble and a sin!!
