Gold, strictly speaking, is not an investment because it does not produce an income stream. If you have it insured, it actually costs to own it. The way people make money on gold is by speculating on price change. If you buy gold, and the price goes down, you may be leaving less than you think. |

others have given info on where to get gold - but its not a great investment as the value can rise and fall depending on what else is going on in the world ; at the moment its relatively high as its seen as a safe haven ; but could fall when this financial mess settles down again. and the buying and selling costs of gold coins ( when the dealer takes his cut) will eat into any profit
premium bonds cannot be passed on when you die - they have to be cashed in on death..
over time property, shares or quality antiques are the things which generally appreciate in value - but timing is key and at the moment now is not great as the buying price of all of these is likely to fall over the next year... so if you are planning on living a little longer just wait a bit for the right thing to come along at the right price |

Gold bullion in September outperformed all other commodities, yet all precious metals are way oversold. Silver seems due for a catch-up rise.
There is no safe place for your money right now in the financial meltdown. In a full-blown depression, even cash (US Dollar) and even bonds are at risk. Where is that $700 billion bailout money going to come from, and the $300 billion that Bernanke injected by mere slight of hand w/o constitutional authority, behind the scenes. At least now we know in which bank to leave some money, the three banks they won't allow to fail, unless the US Gov't itself goes broke, employing the virus to cure the disease.
How bad is it going to get if this is just the beginning? What awaits next but a currency upheaval, either when everybody realizes there is nothing backing the Dollar but more debt, or China starts selling their hoard of Dollars and US debt?
Maybe we should all be thinking of survival, in addition to future investments. In that sense, we should be in precious metals, T-bills, cash, gold coins and numismatic coins in a safe-deposit box in several countries.
The best place I've found to purchase precious metals is here:

I wouldn't mess with gold at these prices unless your looking to trade. Which I believe you're not. Go with the safer bet with the bonds or maybe a cd. It's important that you don't lose value in your earnings that were meant to be passed on. With gold, why couldn't we see another $100 off if the market starts heading a little north in a month? Gld is the etf I would Trade for gold. not invest. good luck trying to find physical gold for anywhere near the current spot price. Ebay's got the bars, coins, etc. All above fair market that I've seen. |

Gold coins are easy in many ways. Buy them from a local coin dealer. Its worth price shopping a bit. |

I think gold is overrated. It hasn't really gone up that much in my lifetime. Simplest are just US government bonds. You can buy them at any bank. I bought a ton of them for my daughter's college when she was a baby, and now college is largely going to be paid for (unless she gets into a pricy private school with no ride). |

Here is a good web site:
www.dillongage.com/
They are a wholesaler but a friend of mine bought direct from them. Retailers have a big mark-up over the price a wholesaler charges. |
