It depends on many factors. Risk tolerance, capitalization, experience, willingness to do due diligence, insider information just to name a few. |

The long-term annual stock market return is somewhere between 6 and 10% per year...current interest rates on cash holdings in a savings account are around 3 or 4%. The interest on the cash is no-risk...you get what you earn.
However, investing in the stock of a company always entails more risk, and your decision has to be based on whether or not you can afford to lose the money you invest. However, if you do a little work, learn about the company, learn how to examine its finances (not so hard, really!), and figure out whether the shares are over- or under-valued, you should be able to earn about 10% per year.
The key, though, is that you need to buy and hold. The stock price will fluctuate every year and some years are better than others. However, if you pick a good company, and hold for several years, you'll do well--15 years ago, I invested $3000 in Pepsi. Today, it's worth over $10,000, and I've tripled my money. |

Depends on your choice and capability to take risk and type of portfolio wether you intend to go for a short term one or growth oriented long term one.
And a mojour factor would be your comfort level with the stock market in terms of knowledge and ability to select shares at the right time and right price along with when to get out of it at the right time. |
