F | Is it a bad time to get into the stock market right now? |
With consumer confidence so low, the declining dollar, housing market and mortgage crisis. Would it be a bad time to invest 800,000k for my mom to live off of. My father just passed away and now thats how much she has to live off of. She doesn't work and is 55. I told her I thought the stock market might go down a bit this year but I don't really know. Any opinions? |

Wow the first poster is such a dumbass!!!!!! First off, I wish that lame sayings like "catching a falling knife," "Bet the farm" and "Back up the truck" or whatever needs to NEVER be mentioned again. They have been overused and misused by people who have no idea what they are talking about.
Okay. I am composed now. The idea is to buy low and sell high. So if she invested some of that money, she might lose some money now but in the long term she will be rewarded greatly more than if she bought stocks when things recovered. Just don't buy bad companies. You really can't time the market. The media won't tell you that things are better and THEN the market goes up. The market will do better first and then the media will tell you it is okay. It might be tomorrow or in 10 years. I am losing almost 10% and I keep putting more and more money into great companies for cheaper prices. It will recover but you won't know it will until it already happened.
In your mother's situation, she really should visit a CPA or financial planner. Don't go to your local bank. Go to a real planner or CPA. Pay off the house, invest some of the money, and invest in her retirement. |

You should really get a financial planner to go over this with you. I think the economy is close to bottomed out and will get better, so it is a good time to invest. Not everyone would agree with that assessment.
On the other hand, someone with that little money who needs the money immediately to live on for 15-20 years may want to have a lot of that bankroll in something safer--cash equivalent funds, commodities, and so forth, so that large chunks of that 800K don't keep appearing and disappearing as the market fluctuates, because that will cause stress and worry. |

i think the market has some downward movement left in it this year... but you should do something with the money other than hide it under the mattress.. i'm not sure what your mother's financial needs are, but i would suggest talking to a financial advisor before making a rash decision |

I've always heard buy low, sell high. Actually Mellody Hobson, on Good Morning America will tell you now is the time to buy and that the market is always going up over the long haul. |

It would depend if you are looking for long-term or short-term cash flow. If you need cash-flow now, then there may be better places for the money. If you are looking long-term, then it is as good of a time as any. Just make sure you are diversified.
Good luck. |

In my opinion right now is a good time so buy stocks because most stocks are very low, you just have to find them. Over the long run, they will go up...therefore your investments will go up. Since your investing such a large amount of money I would get some professional help for looking for the right companies to invest in. |

I would wait until six months into the recession. Right now we are at the edge of the recession. |

Like experienced investor Mr. Buffet has always said that buy stocks when everyone else is in fear. But you want to buy the good stock. I would divide the money and invest in stocks, tax free funds, cds , highyield money market.

There is really no bad time to get in the stock market. If you are going stay in it for the long haul. Those in it for the long haul. Know the market will go up and down. They buy when market is down. And sell off some of their shares when market goes higher. This causes the market to go up and down. Buy low, sell high. Companies that been around for a long time weather the down turns. You want companies that have a high Pe ranking. Put your money in a lot field. This way you cover yourself. Cause companies do go under. |

Unless you get some reliable information about sound investments, the general rule is to never try and catch a falling knife. Best to wait until it has stopped bouncing around. |
