Right now is the best time possible to buy stocks but the problem is no one has extra money to risk. If you have the capital invest. Follow this website as a guideline for what companies to watch:

Its a very good time to invest right now, you just have to look for good comapanies that are selling at a discount

Depends on your portfolio. Most people use this downtime to buy into companies to buy their equity shares and give them a turn around

I think it is a good time to buy just a bit, preferably through a retirement account, IRA or 401K. You might want to create a practice account at http://www.top10traders.com - the site is free, you can see what others are buying and selling as well - good luck.

Yes, it'is a good time to buy if you're selective.

Don't listen to people who say the Dow is going to fall through the floor. They don't know what they're talking about. The Dow already crashed in October 2008. That's already happened. We didn't see the Dow do 2 crashes in a row in any other downturn in history did we?

What's REALLY happening is it's reporting season and the Dow Jones and S&P500 are moving as companies release their 2008 reports and 2009 forcasts to the market. About half the 30 companies listed on the DJIA have released their reports so far.

So for example, last Wednesday the Dow went up when IBM released its report and down the next 2 days when Microsoft and Genereal Electric released theirs.

The next DOW company to release its 2008 report this week is the worlds largest drug maker Pfizer (PFE)

Some of the big winners last week were
IBM -IBM: http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE50J7HQ20090121
AAPL - Apple: http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE50K6WB20090121
http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE50L3YD20090122
GOOG - Google: http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE50L6QY20090122
http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE50L62A20090123
If you buy any of those 3 at the moment you'll make money

Once all the reports have been released to the market, the Dow is more likely to go up because so many profiting companies are heavily undervalued.

For example, General Electric (GE) has an extremely low P/E ratio of 6.35 and a high dividend yield of 10.30% (that the CEO said the company would keep in 2009) Its current downtrend is not sustainable.

There is high risk of buying individual companies. Earnings are down and some big companies might not make it. So firms considered Blue Chip investments have failed e.g. Lehman Bros, and others are on life support e.g. AIG

But if you have a long term investment horizon e.g. more than 5 years it is probably a good time to buy diversified stock and bond funds.

In a word, NO! This downturn is continuing. The Dow is now in the low 8,000 area and keeps hitting the upper 7s and bouncing back. One of these times it may not bounce and the bottom could be a lot lower if it breaks through the floor. Put your cash in a CD or high interest checking account and wait for the market and economy turn. Miss the first 1000 point run rather than lose 20% of your cash.
