Is it a good time to buy stocks when the market is down?

Gary
Not quite yet, it market I think still has some more wild rides in it. It will be a good time to buy later this year depending on the market. For myself, it may be a good time to increase my position with some of the stocks I have now!

Good of time as any

To some, the recent rally on Wall St. might suggest the volatility is about over and things have stabilized. Yesterday, the DOW managed to close almost 300 points in the green after being down over 300. It was a nice rally indeed. This morning, the market appears to be extending the rally somewhat. However, we advise caution if you are thinking about jumping in now. In our view, this market is far from stabilized as we fear there is still a lot of negative news that will likely unfold. The picture will become clearer as more companies report their earnings in the next few weeks. Interestingly, companies that have recently reported are scaling down their projections suggesting the economy is on the ropes. For example, Apple (AAPL), the company beat their numbers handily, but the stock nosedive after issuing a lower guidance going into the next quarter. For those itching to get back into the market, we suggest exercising patience. The bottom has yet to be reached.

It appears to me that the market is going to present a great buying opportunity soon. I view this current drop as a much needed correction.

It is always better to buy low.

Is it better to buy gas at $4 a gallon or $3.

Is it better to buy a house for $300,000 or $400,000.

The real question is. When do you want, or have to, sell the stock? If it is more than 5 to 10 years, then yes I feel very confident that the stock market will be much higher in the next 5 to 10 years.

Generally, yes. The tricky part is knowing whether the market is truly "down." It could always go lower.

I've answered this question in detail before. See Common Sense Trading http://commonsensetrading.googlepages.com
