Milan1513 | Is it a good time to get into the stock market since it is down? |
This might be an ignorant question.........
I am 24yrs old and am starting to put 25% of my income aside for investing. Should I hold off or is it a good time to get in? Where would you recommend investing my money monthly?
I am going to talk to a broker before I do anything. |

If you're looking long term, I would say yes. The financials with bigger balance sheets will eventually recover. AIG is valued at 45 right now and really has unfairly been dragged down with all the financial crisises surrounding the other companys, however, AIG invested less than 5% of its portfolio in MBS and has enough capital to wait a lot of this out. Others like JP Morgan, Bank of America are in the same boat. I would consult with someone as around May might be a good time to get in when we'll have a better idea how much exposure everyone has to the housing market.
Buy low and sell high is not a valid investment strategy, how do you know when that high or low is? Long term investing is the only solid investment strategy. |

Now is an awesome time to buy! The market is cheap, and stocks are indiscriminately declining. While no one can predict a bottom, we are clearly at an inflection point. If there is one thing about investing I wish people could understand its this: Don't make investment decisions on emotion, and buy low and sell high!
Talking to a broker is smart. He/She will be able to better address your personal goals and risk tolerance than anybody on Y!A. I strongly suggest meeting with a professional as opposed to taking random investment specific advice from this type of forum, the individuals that typically give specific individual advice aren't necessarily qualified to determine suitability, and those of us who are professionals know our responsibility, and do not give investment advice until we determine suitability. |

When investing this is the rule of thumb you always need to follow: Buy Low - Sell High
Buy when you think stocks are low and sell them when they are high.
I bought Bear Sterns yesterday when I heard the news....I sold today with a hugh profit. You need to have the stomach for it and it does not always work, but could be profitable. |

Don't talk to a broker, would you ask a barber if you need a haircut?
Try educating yourself first on investing. I suggest poking around morningstar.com.
Also, I recommend using a low cost online broker instead of using a high priced broker. |

I would put $ in stocks. No load DRIP index funds. You can track the return on the DOW for the past 20 years and see your return. |

I would not put $10 into this crazy market. Up 300 yesterday and down 300 today. The big dogs don't like this market so why should you and I. They can find bargains you and I can not, and they still are selling - not buying. Put your money under the mattress. |
