Is it good for UK people to invest in the US Dollar?
The UK pound has hit its highest level against the US dollar in 26 years.

I'm not a business man, I don't know anything about the stock market, but as a regular joe, is it good for me to buy US Dollars and sit on it for a while until the US dollar rises, and then exchange it back to UK sterling?

Is it worthwhile doing this?

thanks!

Very unlikely... the dollar is at a sustainable rate for the immediate future, and you will always be buying at a worse rate (by about 10-12 cents) than you will be able to sell for... so that means the dollar can strengthen by a good 5% before you break even... meanwhile UK interest rates are at their highest for some time, so that money could be earning up to 6% invested with no risk....

I would say it would be a good investment but not yet, the dollar is on the way down you need to wait until just before it starts coming back.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the US $ rising against the £. Buy some dollars if you are thinking of going to the States, or better still, take a credit card with you.

As an alternative you might consider trading on the currency futures - however if you know nothing about this process this is probably not realistic in the short term. The best thing you could do is actually spend £s in the US as your money will buy more. You could also learn to spread bet the forex market - any gains you made there would be tax free (also a very risky activity - worth learning if you are interested).

I think at some point the dollars going to turn. And then it would be a good time to invest in dollars. But I think their are good reasons for the dollar decline, and the reasons are not going to change fast, it would take a change in their government.

It you want to invest in in America, you might be better investing in US Shares.

its not going to rise because USA wants it down for 2 reasons: it wants a competitive edge over Euro and secondly it wants China to revaluate its currency so it is trying to push it down for a level play, now since UK Pound is the strongest currency around i will suggest you to invest in emerging markets or global funds which come in UK you will get better appreciation and good gains

As far as I know the pound has always been higher then the US dollar. Not a good investment, in my opinion.

I think you don't need to invest in Dollars, cause as you know, Euro has a higher cost than Dollar.

Buy property in US, it is cheap now and with the pound worth 2.05 dollars you could do well. For example I have a 2 bed/2bath villa in Florida for sale at $200k well worth looking at. Go to Broward MLS and check out property MLS No F850388
