charlotte q | Is it possible to make money or at least hold on in the stock market during a recession? |
I am losing so much right now. I am in Vangard with well diversification.
I had $655,000. last Jan and now I have $505,000.00. I did make some withdrawls because I am retired> |

The stock market usually drops before the recession hits. By the time the recession actually hits, the stock market is often already in recovery mode, as the stock market looks forward to the coming recovery. Therefore you can make money in a recession by buying when stock are low and waiting for the recovery. I suspect we are near the bottom of the current bear market. However, stock markets are highly unpredictable and I may be wrong.
I may note you say you are at Vanguard and are well diversified. I may point out that Vanguard suggests you should be heavily into bonds by the time you retire. If you are "well diversified" by Vanguard standards, you should have been mostly in bonds and not lost much. I give this example of a well diversified Vanguard fund for retired people: |

I'm in the same boat except that my money is in a brokerage firm. If you hold long enough, the market will recover.
I'm considering liquidating most of my stocks and stay in cash until the market starts back up. I would miss the first part of any new bull market, but there is plenty of time to ride it to the top if you wait for a sign that the market is recovering.
You can use the 50 or 100 day moving average as a guide. You can go to Yahoo finance, type in SPY or DIA and using interactive charts have it draw the 50 and 100 day moving average. When the line for the stock price goes above which ever one you choose, it is indicative (not certain) that the market is going to go up further. |

well since your retired have you ever thought of just manging you own money?? the way to make money during these markets is simple short short short you cant short tho until this wend. i manage my own money and i get triple digit returns shorting stocks is sooo much more easier than going long.. think about it how many stocks go way up vs way down?? most go down and its a lot more easier to find bad comapanys then it is to find the next MSFT. you can also daytrade or trade options there is many opportunities but if you dont manage your own money then they will cut down on risk = less profits also... hell i could double your money by the end of the year seriously too |

There is a difference between diversification and "asset allocation". You should be diverse within a good "asset allocation". If your "asset allocation" was not thought out out well.... it doesn't matter if you were diverse.......................
Learn "asset allocation". Set it up to meet your needs and your risk tolorence. Not an easy task..... but not doing so will give you the results you've gotten so far.

There is always an opportunity to make money in the market. One option is short selling, but with the current ban it is not an option. The problem with taking your money out is when do you put it back in the market? |

It is possible but difficult. If you are already retired and depending on your retirement funds, you should be largely out of the stock market (maybe 10-20% in dividend-yielding stocks) and have the rest in fixed-income instruments. |

Yes it is possible to make money in the stock market during a recession. Though it is very difficult. The market will eventually recover anyways though. If you are retired, I would recommend you changing your invest portfolio to mostly bonds. |
