it's always a good time to invest, either long or short

There are literally thousands of people each day playing the market for those short term gains. Some are winners and some are losers. You have one big thing working against you--broker commissions. Every time you jump into and out of a position, you pay for the privilege. The on line brokers make their living off of short term traders.

To make short term gain in stocks , a good time generally will be during November/December , for a year end rally provided no calamity happens.
The Mutual funds and Institutions will be trying to make money on
SP500 and they are generally expecting to make 8-12% . That is generally norm in Bull market. So far this year they have not been successful in
making and keeping money in SP500. They are going to try their best at the year end rally.

It is certainly possible to make short term gains. Stocks go up and down every day. But is also just as possible to make short term losses.
Given a long enough time period and a broad enough selection of stocks there are virtually always gains. But if you look at various charts of individual stocks (yahoo's are good) you'll see ups and downs. If you're really good or really lucky you'll be able to buy when the price is about to go up, and sell when the price reaches its peak.
There's no sure way to do this, and nobody has ever been able to do it consistently. A few years ago there were thousands of people who thought they could support themselves as "day traders". When the dot com boom ended and prices for all stocks quit going up they found that they were good at turning big piles of money into small piles of money!

Yes, you can make short gains. However, this time of year is traditionally a bad time to leap into the stock market. Late September, early October are when activity picks up.

It is possible....if you have trading capital in the six figures.

If you want short term gains, you should look at financial instruments that are leveraged like options or currencies.

I used to trade stocks and options, but now I solely trade currencies. After trading the foreign exchange market, there is no going back! There's no better market!

For options, you should check out http://www.investopedia.com/university/options/

For forex, you should check out http://www.babypips.com

yes always with the right stocks

i would suggest finance.yahoo.com and find the stock screener.

however, it is always best to invest for the long-term.

Yes it is the best time to invest but only with a long term perspective, to make short term gains you got to be really smart or lady luck should be working overtime with you
