Yeah, but it's a gamble. You spend quite a lot for the website, including web hosting and the URL, if needed. And then you gotta see if people could have web hosting rights or anything for a price. But it's rare, even for people who donate. In my opinion, I don't think it's very profitable, because most good websites for all categories are free. People don't donate. See what I'm saying?

If you have the knowledge to build a decent website it can always be profitable.
I'd think the main thing to keep in focus whilst trying to profit from a website is trust for the customer and having a website which doesn't have any close competition considering how many websites are out there.
A website always needs a good business plan to be successful and a detailed one at that. So it really all comes down to you, the creator of the website to make it profitable.
Advertisements are a good source of revenue on websites but its your responsibility to make sure too many advertisements aren't put on your web page as this would cause users to be dis-satisfied (especially pop-up ads).
Making a website popular is an immense task and that's the main challenge when creating the website. How will I make people talk about this website? How will I make them come back and bring friends? It has to be different to every other site but that is a very difficult task considering you maybe competing with companies which make millions.

Hi, it really depends on what kind of website you are planning to build. I have built several dozen commercial websites and there are two which I find profitable. 1) Running free online services supported with advertisements (e.g. classified ads, jobs website, social networks) and 2) E-Commerce (e.g. online stores, subscription based services.
I suggest you start thinking on the following things:
1. What kind of website would I like to build?
2. Who is my market (e.g. teens, professionals, local, international)?
3. Do I have the right skills and time to manage this website?
4. How do I get the money needed to keep the website running?
There are just a few things that might help you kick start your plans.

it depends if the business is successful through its website and if it is you will need to decide on whether the changes will be significant. if you change the url then this could cause problems for customers and you could get confused.
