If you're comfortable you can spare $300 or so put it into a mutual fund. Keep some in cash for emergencies.

Since your account has a small sum, you need to watch the commission rate you pay for stock trading very carefully. A high rate will eat into your profit. Open an account at an on-line discount brokerage. I recommend Etrade.

Good luck!

do it if you feel you should.

Investors are always saying to have a foundation to build on. Basically a savings account. The funny thing is these same investors also tell you how much the stock market has increased, how the S&P outperforms savings accounts when you have money. The decision is yours. If it is in a bank you never have to watch your money it will grow just fine little by little and you'll never know. If you invest it in stocks you'll need to watch it, nurture it. Don't be afraid to get rid of the stock if it falls in price too much. The more work you do the better your chances of haveing your money grow. And don't forget the brokers fees it will eat into your profits.

I would recommend mutual funds for better diversification, but unless you are only buying cheap small cap stocks then that wouldn't be so bad....risky though.

It's great to start thinking about investing, and I think there's some advantage to beginning to invest, even if you are a very small investor to start with. But I'd suggest safe mutual funds at this level in order to get diversification. Also, be careful about expecting too much too quickly. Stocks do not typically behave the way we want on our timetable. Stocks are great for the long term, but somewhat unpredictable for the short term. Think about what you can do for a long-term strategy, not just how to make quick money.

One should only invest funds that they can afford to loose, the stock market has made many people rich it is always a gamble. go to yahoo financial and set up a make believe portfolio to check and see how your choices would make out, if most of your choices are good then put real money on them. also small cap stocks tend to grow more.

Make sure you research each stock carefully to see if it has a history of good performance. Even then, it's no guarantee.

No probs, as long as you study the stocks carefully before sticking your money on 'em + also do it via a SHAREBUILDER account.

For stocks I'd suggest looking at:
Anheuser-Busch (BUD)
Walmart (WMT)
Canadian Pacific (CP)
Union Pacific (UNP)
Toyota (TM) + Honda (HMC) and sticking a minimum of $100 on each.... when the dividends for them get paid out, use 'em to top up your holdings.

Just to prove how affordable it is, I've had a Sharebuilder account through the HALIFAX bank / building society (who run the UK Sharebuilder franchise under license or whatever from Sharebuilder.com) for just over a year now...... and must have at least 50 different companies in my portfolio by now (dispite the fact I've been on Unemployment benefit nearly 6years this summer).
