lucdeluc | Is it wise to buy gold? |
I have equity in my property but still owe about 50 grand. If I bought 50 grand worth of gold is it feasible that it may double in value due to the current financial crisis. Or would I be wise to just keep paying off the loan in a conservative but rational manner? |

They say to only put about 10% of your net worth in precious metals; the rest should be a mix of other investment such as real estate or bonds, stocks if you're brave and think you can pick good ones in this market. Paying off a loan is a good return on an investment--say you borrowed at 5% interest, every time you make an extra payment you are saving yourself interest and making that 5%. It is feasible that gold may double but it's too risky to put $50K into it. |

Gold would be a wise choice, but don't forget about silver. Silver is an excellent investment as well as gold.

A loan is a loan and if you think to pay off later on the assumptions that gold price may improve (which can be true but not sure) then still it will be risking as you will be squaring off the gain with the accumulated interest.
Better pay your loans, cut on expenses and invest savings in fundamentally good stocks. Market will rebound for sure. |

Gold will do better in the next five years (in all probability, no guarantee) than that property you own.
If you truly believe your property will gain in value in the next five years and the property taxes you are paying, and the interest you are paying, the maintenance you are paying, will net you a better investment, good luck, I hope you are right. |

I bought stock in AMEX:CEF 4 years ago, and it has doubled since then, due to the appreciation in gold prices. Central fund invests all the money in gold and silver bullion.

It might take 4 more years for the price of gold to double again, or it might not. Only you can evaluate that against paying off your loan.
