Is now a good time to sell my investments?
They have been increasing like crazy the past few months, and other than the big drop about a week ago, things are slowly decresing still. However, I am still far above what I bought them at. People are saying that the economy is headed for another big recession. So would now be a good time to sell? I have money invested in 3 mutual funds... GGOAX (midcap), GGSAX (largecap), and OPMSX(smallcap). I bought them in mid May, and they have done pretty well. Is now a good time to sell and just wait until the stock market is ready to go back up???? ORRR should I wait out the "recession", no matter how long it may be? I also have more money to invest now. Any great recommendations in order to still earn money during this "recession"?

starnge no one looks at the mutual funds before giving answers......IF YOU DID!!!!!!

You would of seen that each and every one of his funds is a LOADED FUND!!!! While I don't mind loaded funds you would be better off in no load funds. And even better than that are ETF's if you can stomach the wild rides. Trying to time the market never works but having stop losses does. OPSMX is a loser unless you bought more in August. GGSAX you made a really small profit on it (if any the loaded fees ate it up) GGOAX is your only true winner.

Eh not bad but you could do better.

The media has been screaming recession for the past two years. Do you really want to listen to these people?.

Trying to time the market seldom works well, especially with mutual funds. Decide what your investment objectives and time horizon are and pick good funds with proven track records that fit those objectives. Stick with them.

Have you considered placing a stop loss or a trailing stop loss order? These can be usefull tolls to lock in a profit if the market turns south. Consult a fee only advisor for more details.

My economics professor showed the class one day that if you invest in the stock market over a 10 to 20 year period, you will make money. Many argue buy low and sell high. I believe if you are in it for the long term, keep it. If you are in it for a fast buck, sell. In my way of thinking, the long term is better and I think you should keep it. I like mutual funds. Great question

you should have a exit strategy before buying the stock
what is your expectation on the profit??
30%?? 50%??

whatever it is, christmas, good news, bad news....
you dont care, if it had met your expectation, sell it

Bhau
Get rid of weak ones.
Sell 25% investments having given return 25%(annulized).
Sell those which have given you more than 100%(annulized)

Who knows maybe china will sell all there bonds and the U.S won't be able to dish out I.O.U's and then that recession will start!!!! Or it may not atleast not for another year in my opinion. Why are worried your money is in mutual funds anyways???? If you get hit you'll have plenty time to react. Ride your funds till you consistenly start losing money then sell. If you notice any trend that last too long sell! but if it's a small down short term trend ride that baby back up. I hope we don't go into a recession I would lose alot

Trying to out-guess the market is tough. Some people sell half their positions to take profit. Others ride it out. There are other good suggestions in the answers you're getting
The 'market' seems to be becoming more of a global market, meaning we're holding more global companies and foreigners holding more of ours. There's also increasing $s in mutual funds. Just these two factors give more stability to the 'world market' and our investments.
If you sell you might have to get back in at a higher level. You'll probably also have to prepay your tax obligations on your profits. BUT, nobody ever got hurt real bad, taking a profit. Also, I'll agree with you that more analysts seem to agree on a coming downturn. So, go with your gut, but if and when you buy back in, set up a regular contribution system, so that you'll be buying during all phases of the market and holding. (But then, you might really like moving in and out.)
I, too, worry about China, but I can't imagine them doing anything harmful to a world market that they have by the tail. On the other hand, we are seeing our dollars coming back from abroad to buy up our businesses and real estate. But, even Greenspan doesn't worry about that (yet).
If you can part with $100 or so a year, subscribe to Morningstar or others for ongoing online advice on individual securities, funds and general market advice.
Apple (aapl) seems unstoppable (in the long run) because they have so much going for them. The price just spiked, but its likely to subside a little before 1/1/08 if you can wait. Use a discount broker. Good luck!

Yes. (If you don't want to lose money)
No. (If you want to make money)

It seems you really could use a Portfolio Manager to keep an eye on your money.

THERE IS NO RECESSION YET.

However, there is a 40% chance of a recession according to Alan Greenspan.

If you sell short a few House related companies then you will make a lot of money.

It seems the house market is going down until 2009

try to look up the status of stock market.

if it goes up, time for you to decide whether to sell or continue your investments. You'll probably have gains.

but watch out as it goes down, losses may prevail.
