thought SO.
Is right now a good time to invest in the stock market?
Given that our economy is in a recession and stocks are falling. . .is this the time to buy or would it be stupid to? I heard the Kennedies got all of their money from buying tons of cheap stock during the Depression. . .

Buy low, sell high. Buy when things are on sale. Stocks, and stock funds, are on sale. It's a good time to invest.

The economy is NOT in a recession, only to those that buy into liberal news media fairy tales.

No it's not "stupid" to invest in this market. there are many good value buys out there at these levels.

Good investors and/or traders, make money in both good markets and bad markets

The Kennedy's money came from illegal bootlegging operations. Joe Kennedy, the father of the clan, was a real slime ball he had not respect for law and order.

Many shrewd investors made money during the depression in the stock market, Joe Kennedy was a late comer, and often strong armed many in helping him.

Hi, Gonzo,

In my opinion it's always a great time to invest in stocks, because there're always good companies that pay dividends. So long as they keep meeting the basic needs of people, they'll keep on making money and paying dividends to their shareholders.

Of course, the market prices for these stocks go up and down just like all stock prices -- so now is a good time to buy.

That doesn't mean stocks won't ever go cheaper. Now they appear relatively cheap -- but they could drop a lot in the next year or ten or twenty. Who knows? Nobody.

But the sooner you start buying stocks that pay dividends, the sooner you start collecting the dividends.

Just for perspective --

The Dow Jones reached its pre-Crash peak about August 1929. It didn't reach that level again until late in 1954 -- 25 years later. So if you'd bought "growth" stocks in August 1929, you'd have seen NO growth for over 25 years.

If you bought dividend-paying stocks in August 1929 and reinvested the dividends, by 1954 your net worth quadrupled -- just from receiving and reinvesting those dividends.

But if you think you can buy and sell for quick profits, sooner or later you'll get burned in every market.

best, Rick Stooker

It is always a good time to buy in the stock market. Of course not every industry is smart to buy in. And don't limit yourself to companies located and driven by the US economy. For example Mexico's economy is doing fine. Check out companies that are involved in building Mexico's infrastructure such as CX, EWW. In the US right now the commodity companies are prospering, tech companies also.

"The economy is NOT in a recession, only to those that buy into liberal news media fairy tales."
--------------

PBBFFFFFFFT! Tell that to our "liberal myth telling" FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD:

Fed officials viewed economic activity "as likely to be particularly weak in the first half of 2008;

The Fed also forecast higher unemployment and inflation for this year.

Under its new projections, the Fed now believes gross domestic product will grow between just 0.3 percent to 1.2 percent this year.
------
We already had 0.6% growth in Q1. To get to 0.3% for the whole year that mean CONTRACTION.

That sounds like a recession to me. Splitting the difference between the high and low estimates, it still means almost no growth this year, flat, almost zero.
-----------------

Gonzo, to answer your question, I have seen studies testing if you bought at the HIGH of the market each year or averaged in over the year, each year for ten years. The high would be considered the worst time each year to buy.

At the end of ten years, because of the upward bias in the market, meaning it is rising year after year, your total return is not much lower from buying at any time over the year.

IOW, in the long term it is more important to spend more time in the market than it is to try to time the market.

Personally I only adjust my cash and move in and out when there are obvious extremes. I do that rarely.

Remember the market looks forward six to nine months. So the current economy and how the market trends are not exactly the same. Projecting six to nine months ahead gets us in to next year when things are projected to be more stable and a turnaround more likely.

I make my decision a little differently. I look at the likelyhood it might go down versus up. The risk/reward ratio.

I do NOT think it is all that likely to go up soon. But overall I think since our lows it is less likely to go down. (But there may be some dips before the end of the year).

I expect the market to be higher than now by the end of the year, or soon after.

JMHO- Standard disclaimer.

Yes, depending on your strategy you can make money by 'borrowing' stocks, selling them at a high price say $90.

Once the stock falls below $85 or whatever level you set, you cover the "short" you did by borrowing the stocks.

You just made $5 a share or more.

There is no way to predict how the market tomorrow will be, everything is taking risks for profits. If you are a day-trader for stocks, then you know that a few minutes can mean the difference between losing $5 dollars or $200.

I have lost money shorting before,so beware.
