Is the bailout going to affect the dollar? I mean, is it going to devaluate versus the mayor currencies?
Thank you people, I will appreciate it

Not necessarily, in fact, if putting a floor under the housing market and succeeds in freeing up capital as expected, growth will rise causing the need to raise interest rates, which will continue the rise of the dollar against Euro which has no choice but to lower their rates shortly.

The bailout has and will.

I think that will be one of the things that happen. That means that we have inflation to look forward to. So long term you should find assets that will keep their value and actually gain against a devalued dollar.

That would include gold and some stocks. Also some houses and other real estate.

I would also look at your employment and steer your self toward an industry that might do well in an inflationary environment.

Hmm, multiple trillions in debt, multiple trillions in unfunded contractual liabilities (think social security and federal pensions for starters), continued fiscal red ink in normal budget items, and the dismantling of a substantial part of the country's industrial capacity by shipping jobs abroad, so now we are shelling out to shore up Wall Street and banks affected by this mortgage fiasco.

Sounds like the federal government is going to have to come practically close to that old (and often misleading) charge of "printing more money".

On Wall Street, if you simply issue more shares, particularly without giving the previous stockholders their proportional share of those new shares, this is called dilution. A diluted dollar, therefore, is one that is worth less. Yes, that will devaluate the dollar against all but those currencies much weaker still. I suspect that it will also lend itself to inflation, which frequently is when too many dollars chase the same amount of goods. The money will be worth less, and more of them will fairly soon be required to buy what we used to buy before.

Yep, will and has. Will again, if they do it next year for the rest of the Democratic handout to banks...

Short term...no. The bailout will add a degree of confidence in the U.S. economy which will have the effect of increasing the value of the Dollar.

Long term...depends on the currency it is paired against. It appears that the Euro zone and British economies are running down the same road as the U.S. economy. The Dollar is still considered a "safe" currency and many will opt to hold dollars against euros or pounds thus strengthening the U.S. Dollar against those currencies. However against the Japanese Yen and Swiss Franc it is likely to lose.
