Is the daily volume of a stock traded really important ?
when for every seller there's a buyer why shold we look at the volumes ? what should be construed when the volume is higher or lower ?

I'd like to add to Califrich's answer:

Daily volume fluctuations are not that important and should be expected. What's important is a volume spike (1-10 X daily volume) combined with a price move (up or down). It indicates that something new and important is happening to the company.

If you read this indication correctly, you can either profit from it or save yourself from a financial disaster.

Califrich
Volume is very important because it affects the stock's liquidity -- your ability to buy and sell it for a reasonable price. Low-volume stocks that just trade a few thousand shares per day are not very liquid. This means they will have a large bid-ask spread. The asking price (the higher of the two) is what you pay to buy the stock, and the bid (the lower of the two) is what you get to sell it. So when you deal in low-volume stocks, you will pay more to buy and get less when you sell -- not a happy combination. In the most liquid stocks, the bid--ask spread is only about a penny, having very little impact on your profitability.

another problem with small volume stocks is that their price can easily be manipulated by unscrupulous folks. so be careful if you are being a stock with low trading volumes that are rising on small volume. you may have trouble finding buyers when the stock crashes, then you could lose everything or nearly everything.

daily volume is important even with "bigger stocks" because it is the "big boys" that drive stock prices. Think of it this way: if there are a million shares outstanding, and a mutual fund or pension plan manager decides to sell 300,000 all at once because he/she thinks the company sucks or just wants to reap some profit, and you are trying to buy 100 shares because you think it is an up and comer, guess what is going to happen? stock price tidal wave. heavy daily volume is usually an indicator that the big investors are moving in or out of the stock.

Now imagine 7 mutual fund managers all trying to unload the same stock at once, who's gonna buy a million shares? not me, maybe you! there might be one mutual fund manager out there, but if he doesn't have the cash or interest, the price will drop far and fast.

On the other side of the coin, it can be interesting to follow mid-cap stocks that are good companies that you think are temporarily down. If they start to rise in price on rising volume, maybe you can ride a tidal wave up, hoping that the big boys have "discovered" the stock, and are gobbling it up. then your 100 shares (or whatever) can surf up with them.

in stock market, price movement and volume traded do indicate something. for example, when the stock price rally with very high volume traded, you can say that most investors are bullish about the stock outlook.

and if the most stocks behave the same, you can say that that the economy is about to take off. although this doesn't necessarily true, its probability to happen is very high. technical analysts combine both price and volume correlations into stock price projection.

I would not say its really so important on reading daily volume of a stock. What really important is the latest current news of the companies. Eg. The news that Apple (APPL) has anncounced it successfully invented I-Phone, you will know the volume of that day will be higher.

Frank Castle
1) Yes.
2) If that was true then the stock price would stay the same permanently.
3) Because everybody wants liquidity and most individual investors want to invest their money in the same companies as institutional investors. (They have more resources to increase profits and reduce risk)

Im fairly new to the stock market but I dont think there is a seller for every buyer..... much like when you go to the store.... some things are sitting on the shelf until someone buys them. Until someone buys the stock shares they are "shares outstanding" which are not really owned yet. When someone sells shares they go back to market.... not to another person. If more ppl are selling then buying this makes the price of the stock go down, or visa-versa. Sort of like a supply in demand thing. But I could be mistaken
