Is there a certain stock that is steadily going up in value right now?
I want to get involved in the stock market, but I want to start out with a good stock.

No. No stock - even good ones - will steadily go up in value. They all have some degree of volatility.

If you aren't prepared to buy a stock and watch it drop, you shouldn't begin to invest in stocks.

your best bets would be GE, AT&T, Exxon, and Wal-Mart right now

Right now the market is falling. A few stocks that reported better than average news today went up, and they might even stay up for the day and evening. Who knows about tomorrow.

Problem right now is credit. When credit tightens, small business and individuals have a harder time borrowing money for capital improvements. This makes investors less certain about the ability for a company to expand or grow and thereby grow it's profits.

Large businesses also eventually get affected.

There were many "bets" placed that subprime mortgages would be a good investment by the lending institutions, either with false intentions or very poor foresight on their parts. What happens when they are wrong and start losing large amounts of capital from "write downs" on their books, from a loss of capital in their business because borrowers are not paying them back for money they borrowed to buy a house or insure a bond on mortgages, is that they then have to find funds to continue their operations. These funds, since they don't come from their returns on their mortgage bets/investments income, have to come from their company's savings and then from selling stock to get money to run their business.

These mortgage companies, that have lost money, are heavily invested in the stock market in various securities that were going up fast while the subprime mortgage business was booming. But since that is no longer happening, they need money to run their own businesses and they have to sell stocks in other securities they own to get money to run things and pay their own people.

So they sell stocks in big companies that they bought big time on the way up, which drove the prices of those securities up quickly at the same time.....more shares bought than sold equals a rise in price. , more sold than bought equals a lowering of price. So as the "big boys" pull out, if you are a small fry investor, your shares become worth less.

I am just trying to show you the connection between the large financials condition and the stock market rise and fall.

So buying to make money in the stock market off of share price appreciation alone is a terrible thing to do right now, no matter what you are invested in at this point....pretty much.
