In general there is a relationship between risk and return in investing. Relatively safe investments--government bonds, money market funds, bank accounts--won't give you a very good return, but there's not much chance that you'll lose money. Stocks and higher risk bonds can provide very high returns, but there is a very good chance that you'll lose a significant amount of money.

In general if you have a long time horizon, invest in stocks--good luck and bad luck should cancel out, and you'll have a better overall return. On the other hand if you expect to need the money you're investing in the very near future (ie to pay for college, or a house) it's better to pick a relatively safe investment like bonds or money markets.

Also if you invest in stocks diversify your investments to minimize the risk of accidentally picking the next Enron. Mutual and exchange traded funds can let you do this easily.

There is always more risk if you don't understand what you are doing.

With some investments it is easier to control risk. People use tools and systems to lessen the degree of risk.

Yes. There are no sure bets. Risk and reward go hand in hand--the greater the potential reward, the greater the risk of loss. See the webpages listed below for details.

Placing money into a savings account at a bank will produce a gain on your principal. This is a zero risk investment.

Buying stock in a company at a price then hoping to later sell it at a higher price contains risk. The risk is that the stock price may go down. If you sell then, you have lost money.
The stock price may never increase in value but continue lower until it is worthless.
