Is this a bear market?
Should we listen to the Wall Street pundits and T.V. talking heads?
Additional Details
Thanks for the good information.

Yes, psychology plays a big part.

The sticker shock most will get when they compare monthly statements may cause more selling in what is amounting to a steep and vigorous stampede, with some courageous buying sprees in between.

Here's a stock market chart for the years 2001-2003 (the last recession / bear market.) http://www.financialsense.com/editorials/griess/2004/0727.html

Take a look at it.

Now, pull up a 5 or 10 year chart of the Dow or S&P: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=%5EGSPC&t=5y

Notice the timeframe around September 07. Notice where we're at now.

See any similarities?

Maybe. We're down about 17 or 18 percent on the Dow and S&P

Oddly enough I would say no. I will explain - the market turmoil is soley due to the bubble in the Housing market. This is a situation that has to be resolved one way or another. The current stock market losses are just a small side effect of this. I believe the stock market to be fundamentally healthy and this to be a rebalancing phase of market activity. I expect there to be an equally large rebound in the markets as they refocus on the profitable value stocks.

A fairly commonly accepted condition of a bear market is one in which there is a prolonged period of widespread pessimism, a 20% drop in stock market, a recession in the economy accompanied by high unemployment rates and high inflation. I don't think these conditions exist today in the US.

It has been bearish for about a week. The reasons for this are more psychological than financial, however. Intel posted bad numbers and the news started going haywire. Microsoft posted great numbers and nobody listened. Lenders started writing down bad debts and the media was in a frenzy again. Regulators pushed for help to bonds insurers and it barely helped. The Fed cut interest rates 75 basis points and the media screamed that the Fed must have been caught napping at the wheel. There's bipartisan support for a stimulus package, and the media focus on the renegades who want to make it more difficult than it has to be.

Once the sheeple wake up and see that the media needlessly stampeded them once again, the markets will head north with due haste.

Market works on sentiments. US is facing financial problems.
Financial institution are making losses. There is a fear of recession. All these signs are not healthy. Therefore one should be carefull before investing and he should book profit. There are ups and down. You can get a chance at lower level.
Therefore avoid taking risk.

I don't see too many bulls running around loose. I do see a lot of idiots in Washington though.
